October Whale Watching Safari

Experience the Magic of Late-Season Whale Watching in Hervey Bay

Join Salty Safaris for a special late-season whale watching adventure and experience some of the most heartwarming whale encounters of the year.

As the whale season draws to a close, Platypus Bay becomes a nursery for humpback whale mothers and their calves. These sheltered waters provide a safe place for young whales to rest, grow, and prepare for their long journey south. While our October tours do not include whale swimming, they offer an incredible opportunity to witness the next generation of humpbacks up close from the comfort of our small-group adventure vessel. Hervey Bay remains one of Australia's best whale watching destinations through October, with plenty of whales still enjoying the calm waters alongside K'gari before continuing their migration.

Why October is Special

October offers a completely different whale watching experience to the middle of the season.

You may encounter:

  • Mothers teaching their calves important life skills

  • Playful young whales practising breaches and tail slaps

  • Curious calves approaching the vessel

  • Relaxed whale behaviour in sheltered waters

  • Smaller crowds on the water

The interactions between mothers and calves can be some of the most memorable whale encounters you'll ever witness.

Small Group Whale Watching

Unlike large commercial vessels, our small-group tours provide a more personal and immersive experience.

With limited passenger numbers, you'll enjoy:

  • Uncrowded viewing areas

  • Better opportunities for photography

  • Personalised commentary from our experienced crew

  • A closer connection to the wildlife and environment

Every trip is different, and no two whale encounters are ever the same.

Why We Don't Swim in October

By October, many of the whales in Hervey Bay are mothers with young calves. To ensure these animals can rest and travel without disturbance, our October tours are dedicated solely to whale watching.

This allows us to focus on observing these incredible whales naturally while providing guests with an unforgettable wildlife experience.

An Unforgettable Wildlife Experience

Whether you're visiting Hervey Bay for the first time or returning to see the whales again, October offers a unique opportunity to witness one of nature's most remarkable migrations.

Join us aboard Wipeout and experience the wonder of Hervey Bay's humpback whales as they prepare for the next stage of their journey.

Watch the whales as they begin their annual migration back south

Join our Whale Watching and Beach Safari and experience the ocean before the crowds arrive. This limited-time adventure offers a relaxed, small-group cruise along the coastline as we search for the first humpbacks of the season.

Within this tour, we make a stop on one of many pristine beaches and sandbanks of the Northern Great Sandy Straits to dip your toes in the ocean and enjoy a taste of island life.
